Physics forms the basic foundation course for any Engineering stream. The Department of Physics, since its inception in 1998, conducts the various courses like Engineering Physics, Materials Science, Nanoscience and Technology, Medical Physics and Medical Optics to different disciplines of Engineering. Apart from these courses, Department of Physics offers Post-graduation, Master of Philosophy and Doctoral degrees in Physics under the ambit of Vinayaka Missions University.
The Department of Physics has a good infrastructure with well-established laboratory which allow the students to perform their experiments individually. The Department has a team of highly qualified, well experienced and dedicated faculty members with specialization in different areas of research.
The research areas that are actively carried out by the faculty members include Computational Physics, Nanomaterials and characterization, Thin films, Crystal growth, Environmental studies, Defect studies, Ion irradiation and Radiation damage. The Faculty members of the Department have collaboration with IIT-Madras (Chennai), IGCAR (Kalpakkam) and UGC-DAE-CSR (Kalpakkam). More than 20 research articles have been published in International journals and National journals/conferences in the last five years.
Students are encouraged to do research projects. Physics Association acts as a platform for the students to develop their skills and research aptitude. Invited talks and Guest lectures are conducted periodically to create the awareness in the student's mind of latest happenings.
As a part of social activity, School students and Polytechnic students of the neighbouring rural areas are exposed to the subject of Applied Physics through the exhibitions conducted in the Department.
The Faculty members of the Department are encouraged to participate in the Seminar/Workshop/Conferences frequently and also to visit the national research institutes to update and enhance their skills for the service of the student community.
The department has spacious and well equipped labs and instruments to provide practical exposure to the students. Students are imparted practical education under the watchful eyes of the instructors. Students take a keen interest in making working models and investigatory projects related to mechanics, light, magnetism, electricity, heat and optics.
The Department of Physics undertakes application oriented experiments in its well-fitted labs.
