Mechanical Engineering - Overview

The evergreen and ever growing mechanical industry witnesses an ongoing enormous development in its technology and application methodologies. It has proved its stability even during the economic recession and has also captured the attention of the whole world with some innovative products. Mechanical Engineering broadly covers the following three major fields namely: Design Engineering, Thermal Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering. Design engineers normally focus on the design components and the in-development of the systems. Engineers in this field are involved with the designing and testing of parts, coordinating tests and also ensuring that the machine or system meets international or national standards. Thermal Engineers deal with the heat and energy produced by the system or machines and conversion of the same into any useful work. An engineer in this field also deals with renewable energy which is the need of hour. A Manufacturing Engineer is primarily involved in making and constructing various machines or systems. The curriculum of B.E. Mechanical Engineering at AVIT has been designed to cover all the above-mentioned aspects through theory and practical classes. Mechanical Engineering is a very broad subject enabling students to choose their career with wider options.

About The Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the year 1998. The Department offers a full-time undergraduate course in the Mechanical Engineering, Automobile Engineering and Mechatronics disciplines. The department also offers a part-time under graduate course in Mechanical Engineering. The Department has well-equipped laboratories with state of the art facilities. The department has been organizing a cascade of seminars, guest lectures, workshops, symposia, conferences, industrial visits, in-plant training and inter collegiate programmes from time to time for the benefit of the faculty members and students through its Technical Association – “Association of Mechanical Engineers of AVIT” and professional bodies like the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the Indian Institution of Production Engineers (IIPE) and the Madras Metallurgical Society (MMS). AVIT is the First Educational institution to establish a Student Chapter of the Madras Metallurgical Society (MMS). The Department of Mechanical Engineering also coordinates the Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) with the Final Year students of all the branches as members. The Department has signed an MoU with “Numerical Simulation Techniques, Japan” to impart a hands-on training on Finite Element Analysis and Nx-NASTRAN to the students. The Department has also signed a MoU with “Diagonal CADD, Chennai” to train the students in CATIA. An MoU was signed with the Madras Metallurgical Society for the benefit of the faculty, students’ project work and in-plant training. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has an excellent placement record. The placements are arranged through the Career Development and Placement Cell and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The Department library is well-equipped with many books and journals covering all the aspects of the Mechanical Engineering field. The faculty members are well qualified with inherent experience in both the teaching and research fields. The faculty members of the department are office bearers of Societies like IIPE and MMS bringing laurels to the department and the institution as well.
