Biotechnology – Overview
Biotechnology as a science has enabled a
multitude of key discoveries in life sciences,
which has changed to a great extent the primary
lifestyle of human society. Modern
biotechnology provides tremendous scope for
developing new products and technologies which
finds promising application in environmental
sustainability and food security. Several
advancements in biotechnology including drug
development, regenerative medicine, genetically
modified crops and organisms, environmental
clean -up, bioprocess technology and nano-biotechnology has made biotechnology a truly
global industry. Technological changes and
globalization has opened a floodgate of
opportunities for the Biotechnology industries
and a great deal of international activity has
centered on producing advantageous
biotechnological innovations for the developing
countries. The new challenge ahead of us makes
research and development in the field of
biotechnology inevitable. To keep pace with this
fast growing field the B. E. Biotechnology programme has been introduced at the
under
graduate level.
Our goal is to provide a quality education for
young students to point the way for exciting,
satisfying and rewarding careers and to expand
their understanding and knowledge of scientific
and engineering principles underlying
biotechnology.
The Department is committed to train students to
utilize their knowledge and expertise for the
rapidly growing biotechnology industry and to
achieve good working cooperation with
experts from other related fields, so as to
encourage and prepare them for research
activities in biotechnology.
The under graduate Biotechnology curriculum is
innovative, exciting and challenging. According
to the global biotechnology scenario the
curriculum is framed to cover the scientific
principles necessary for the advanced
understanding of subjects like Nano-biotechnology, Biopharmaceutical technology,
Molecular modeling and drug designing, Stem cell
biology, Cancer biology, etc. The syllabus of the
laboratory experiments has also been designed in
order to fulfill the objectives of the course.
The Department has excellent laboratories
equipped with the latest instruments of state of
the art quality like HPLC, Ultra- filtration
Unit, ELISA Reader and Washer, Fluorescent
Microscope, Labomed Advanced Trinocular Microscope with
Colour Video Camera and Computer, Thermocycler, Gel
Documentation System,
etc. |
